Mary Kate and Madison - IdahoThe Garden State has joined the growing list of states proposing legislation to ban biological men from competing in women's sports.

The Fairness for Women in Sports Act (Senate bill 3540 and Assembly bill 5545) is the same type of measure that has been introduced, and in some cases passed into law, in more than 30 states so far. West Virginia, for example, recently approved the Save Girls' Sports Act.

Shawn Hyland, director of advocacy for the Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey, says hundreds of parents have already called to encourage their legislators to pass it.

"Because of the rise across the nation of biological boys trying to play on female sports teams, they wanted to make sure that the girls here in New Jersey are not left unprotected from unfair disadvantages," Hyland explains.

He also points out that the state legislature passed a bill in 2006 that recognized gender identity as a protected class.

"In 2019, our high school association even changed their policy that would allow transgender students to play [on] whatever team they wanted to without even producing a doctor's note or providing birth certificates—simply by their self-proclaimed identity at that moment," Hyland tells One News Now.

Opponents of the fairness act describe it as "transphobic" and "dehumanizing."
