Olympic ringsThe International Olympic Committee says it will not allow athletes to take a knee or otherwise protest during the playing of the national anthems but U.S. athletes are being allowed to protest here at home.

When – and if – the world-famous games resume in Tokyo this July, the International Olympic Committee says there will be no political protests by athletes on site.

Radio talk show host Janet Mefferd tells One News Now the Olympic Committee made a good call.

“The whole concept behind the Olympic Games, in part, is to bring countries together across the globe to peacefully compete in athletics,” she says. “And it's a way to put politics aside for a time.”

Mefferd points out that two-thirds of athletes surveyed said they supporting what is known as Rule 50, which forbids any kind of "demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda" at the games.

Janet MefferdDespite the ruling, the U.S. Olympic Committee says it will allow athletes to take a knee or otherwise protest for so-called "justice' during its trials, a move viewed by some as pushback for the ruling.

“Everything has to be woke. Everything has to be woke all the time,” Mefferd complains. “And if you're not screaming and yelling, and causing a fuss, and going out on the streets, then somehow you're not for justice.”

The U.S. policy for its own athletes, she adds, shows how far the U.S. has split and fractured.

"The only one, I really believe," she says, "who can save this country now is the Lord Himself."
