pregnancy ultrasoundPro-lifers in Texas hope lawmakers agree to remind young girls that abortion is a decision that affects more than one person.

Rebecca Parma of Texas Right to Life tells One News Now the Texas Legislature is considering House Bill 1171, a measure that deals with underage girls seeking an abortion.

"Currently if there's a pregnant minor and she wants to circumvent the current law that requires notification and consent from her parents to obtain an abortion, she goes through what's called a judicial bypass process," Parma explains. "In that process, the court appoints to her an attorney ad litem to help represent her best interests within this whole process."

But if the proposed bill is approved and signed into law, then an attorney could be appointed to represent the best interests of the minor's preborn baby.

"It's highlighting the humanity of the preborn child and also giving a voice to the voiceless in a very tangible way," the pro-lifer tells of the bill's purpose. "We want to make sure by appointing an attorney ad litem for the preborn child that [the minor] is just reminded that this decision is affecting two lives and giving a voice to her preborn child as well."

The bill has passed out of a House committee for debate and a vote, which is the furthest such a measure has ever gone.
