I Vote Pro-Life (woman holding sign)The effort to ban abortion has gotten a foothold in Nebraska.

Last week the village of Hayes Center in southwest Nebraska became the 24th in the nation to pass a "Sanctuary for the Unborn" ordinance, meaning abortion will not be allowed within its boundaries. Kim Primavera, chair of the Village Board of Trustees, says the success of a number of Texas cities motivated her to pursue the ordinance.

"When President Biden specifically ... said on January 22nd of 2021 that they were committed to make sure everyone has abortion access in every ZIP code," that also contributed to the effort.

If that promise is kept, then an abortion clinic could have set up shop in Hayes Center, a conservative town that believes life begins at conception.

"We believe in protecting that until natural death," Primavera adds. "As an elected official especially, you take an oath of office to defend the Constitution, and nowhere in the Constitution is murder condoned. So it's a natural extension that you take care of your family, but then when you're in a village, you take care of your village."

She adds that the larger branches of government are slow to move to protect the unborn, so action must be taken by local government bodies. As for Hayes Center, Nebraska, abortion is now illegal.
