troubled teenAbortion advocates in Illinois are pressing lawmakers to do away with the one remaining pro-life law on the books, even though most voters in the state, including abortion supporters, think it should stay in place.

Illinois has passed a law requiring that the parents of a minor girl seeking an abortion must be notified before the girl can terminate her preborn child. However, ongoing litigation has kept the measure from implementation for about 15 years. And now, Amy Gehrke of Illinois Right to Life says left-wing lawmakers are already pushing to repeal the Parental Notification of Abortion Act through HB 1797 and SB 2190.

"Luckily there are several legislators who understand that this is an issue that really transcends abortion," Gehrke adds. "This goes to the heart of parents' rights … to be involved in their children's lives."

According to a survey conducted by the Tarrance Group, 72% of voters oppose overturning the law, and that includes 58% who consider themselves to be pro-abortion. The concern is whether minor girls are mature enough to make such a decision.

"Teenage girls many times act impulsively," the pro-lifer notes. "Sometimes they really do need the help of a trusted family member, their mom or dad, to help them navigate the trials of life … especially when considering something as life-changing as an abortion."

Staff at Illinois Right to Life are already working to educate lawmakers on the preference of Illinois voters to keep the law intact and to have it enforced, but Gehrke says the rest is up to voters in the state.

The Parental Notification Act saves an estimated 1,000 babies a year and is responsible for a 57% drop in teenage abortions. It also protects the young girls from sexual exploitation from older men.
