Xavier Becerra and Planned ParenthoodPresident Joe Biden's pick to lead the Dept. of Health and Human Services is running into trouble in the U.S. Senate and pro-life groups are happily involved in putting the nomination in doubt.

California’s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, is seeking the top post at HHS but his rabid-like support of abortion makes him a prime target.

Kristan Day of Democrats for Life points out that Becerra used his legal powers to punish pro-lifers, including Catholics nuns and pro-life pregnancy centers, in the liberal-run state.

Becerra told senators during a recent hearing that he never sued nuns, which in legal terms is technically true: He sued the federal government when it granted an exemption for Little Sisters of the Poor.

In a 5-4 ruling in 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down California’s controversial law that required pro-life pregnancy centers to post information about abortion access. Becerra was sued over the law and called the ruling that favored the pregnancy centers, which are hated by abortion supporters, “unfortunate.”

The Senate Finance Committee voted on the nomination, which ended in a tie, and he faces a vote before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. If that nomination fails, Senate leadership can call for a vote on the floor.

According to the Day, her Democrat-leaning group is watching Democrat senators Bob Casey and Joe Manchin.

“We urged them both to vote no,” she advises.

Meanwhile, some senators, including some Democrats, have expressed concern over Becerra's lack of medical experience.
