A pro-life group says proposed legislation in the Ohio Legislature that would criminalize abortion is the only real way to stop the "devastation."
The Buckeye State has released its abortion numbers for 2019, which reflect about a two percent drop in the number of children who were terminated in the womb last year.
While Molly Smith of the Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio says that is good news, she tells OneNewsNow it misses the real point.
"55 children per day -- If you average it out for the total number of abortions in Ohio in 2019, 55 children died every single day," she figures. "We need to take this seriously and stop this devastation."
Smith submits only one thing will bring the practice to a halt in her state: H.B. 413, or the "Life at Conception Act," which has been introduced in the House and declares a person's life begins at conception and that a baby is a separate human being with his/her own rights.
"This would actually end abortion," says Smith. "It would make abortion a criminal offense, and the abortionist would be charged as if he had committed a murder. So it would be capital punishment -- the same as whatever the prosecutor decides is warranted; when [an abortionist is] convicted, he would get the same as if somebody who had murdered a child."
If the measure passes and is signed into law, its pro-life supporters fully expect it to face a legal challenge. Even so, Smith believes it is a necessary step in what she calls "the unbelievable slaughter of our children."
