surgical instruments 1Lawmakers in California are considering a bill that would allow midwives who deliver babies to also perform abortions, and that frustrates a pro-life activist.

Under current state law, midwives can birth a child under physician oversight but the bill would change that if approved and signed into law.

Brian Johnston of the California Pro-Life Council tells OneNewsNow it is “incredibly insidious” to allow midwives to be involved in abortion.

“It's basically an expansion of abortion anywhere,” he warns.

Johnston says one only needs to look back at Roe v Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in all 50 states, and the author of the majority decision, Justice Harry Blackmon.

“When he cited the right to privacy as the issue, he said it should be between a woman and her physician,” Johnson observes. “Well, this is cutting the physician out of the process and this is basically putting abortion back into the streets.”

One of the reasons behind the legislation is the shortage of abortionists, but with passage of the bill, midwives will be competing against abortionists for business.
