signing petitionsAdvocates for life in Michigan have taken another step toward bypassing the governor's veto of an important pro-life piece of legislation.

Last May, the Michigan legislature approved a ban on dismemberment abortion (the dilation and evacuation [D&E] method) – but the governor vetoed it. Pro-life groups decided to launch a petition drive to overturn the veto. Chris Gast of Right to Life of Michigan tells OneNewsNow that the Michigan Board of State Canvassers has approved the language of the petition drive.

"… We have 180 days to collect our goal [of] 400,000 signatures … so our [plan] is before the 4th of July to be out there gathering signatures," he informs.

Once the 400,000-plus signatures are obtained they will be submitted to the secretary of state for verification. Once that is accomplished, says Gast, the bill to ban dismemberment abortions in Michigan would go to the state legislature.

"They have 40 days [to get it through] – and if both the House and the Senate vote a simple majority to approve it, it becomes law, totally bypassing our very pro-abortion governor, Gretchen Whitmer," he explains.

Gast explains dismemberment is the most common late-term abortion procedure – and the babies feel excruciating pain, he says. "The abortionist is ripping arms and legs off of the child …. This bill would specifically ban that procedure," he states.

Last year, 1,908 dismemberment abortions were performed in Michigan.
