keep abortion legal abortion kills signsThe Vermont legislature has taken steps to enshrine abortion in its state constitution.

On Monday, Vermont's Republican Governor Phil Scott signed a bill that makes legal abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. It also denies the right of parents to be notified in case their minor girl seeks or obtains an abortion.

"Like many Vermonters, I have consistently supported a woman's right to choose, which is why today I signed H.57 into law," the governor conveyed in a press release. "This legislation affirms what is already allowable in Vermont – protecting reproductive rights and ensuring those decisions remain between a woman and her health care provider."

Mary Beerworth of Vermont Right to Life explains that under the new law there will be no state health oversight of abortuaries.

"… Far and away it is Planned Parenthood clinics that do 90 percent of the abortions; in fact, they have their own internal protocols at Planned Parenthood," she tells OneNewsNow. "Now with H.57 in law, someone could come here and set up an abortion practice and have no oversight or supervision of what they are doing inside that clinic by the State of Vermont."

The bill goes so far as to remove protections for patients, thereby making it difficult for them to sue for malpractice in the case of a botched abortion.

The bill also takes the first step toward adding abortion to the Vermont State Constitution as a fundamental right.

"That process will take three years; that's under way now," Beerworth informs. "The proposal passed the House and Senate by wide margins. It will be on the ballot and go to the people in 2022 – and Vermont could well become the first state to embrace abortion in our own founding document of our state."

That would mean that in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned, the floodgates will already be open for abortion on demand in Vermont.
