NY Gov. Cuomo signing abortion lawNew York could become the next target of proponents of doctor-assisted suicide.

New Yorkers were surprised when Gov. Andrew Cuomo (pictured at left) came out in support of assisted suicide.

Rev. Jason McGuire, executive director of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, tells OneNewsNow the support is surprising because doctor-assisted suicide has never worked as planned, such as in Belgium where children are now being targeted.

“It never stops at just the early stages of assisted suicide,” McGuire warns, “and frankly even at that level, it's extremely dangerous as there are no safeguards to really protect from coercion and from abuse, let alone those in the disability rights community, that are impacted by these types of legislation.”

Gov. Cuomo can't sign a bill unless the legislature passes it, of course, so the logical question is if there is a push for assisted suicide among lawmakers.

There is little energy for it at the moment, McGuire says, but he predicts that will change.

“As those that are fighting for assisted suicide have come off a big win in New Jersey, we expect those millions of dollars and that support will now shift to the Empire State,” he advises. “So when the big campaign dollars begin to flow, all of a sudden things can get very interesting.”
