euthanasia 2Montana lawmakers are trying to straighten out a mess caused by a court ruling on doctor-assisted suicide.

A lawsuit was filed by a man with a terminal illness to legalize doctor-assisted suicide. He died of natural causes but the case continued, and then the Montana Supreme Court in 2009 ruled on it and it was perceived by the media as legalization.

Despite the misconceptions, that is not true according to Lianna Karlin of Right to Life of Montana, so lawmakers want to make it clear.

"This year," Karlin says, "Right to Life of Montana is supporting a bill to make sure that it's understood that so-called physician-assisted suicide will be illegal in Montana."

The court provided a possible legal defense for a physician who assists a person to die if the doctor is caught but the public interpretation is the court ruled in favor of physician suicide in the state.

The mainstream secular media, meanwhile, continues to report it as legal.

If both state chambers approve the measure, there is a problem: Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock is expected to veto it.
