Being pro-life isn't just a religious stance

"Abortion takes a human life" bannerAbortion supporters tend to ignore pro-life advocates on the controversial topic, often discounting their argument by saying, “You're just being religious,” but one pro-lifer gives many good non-religious reasons for choosing life.

"In fact, I think there are more non-religious reasons than there are even religious reasons," says Mark Powell, a Presbyterian minister in Australia. "As a Christian, I've always been pro-life, but as I stepped back and reflected on it and thought about common grace issues, I just thought there's some really powerful arguments here that relate to us as human beings."

These arguments include the fact that life begins at conception, meaning that abortion is therefore an act of murder – one in which the baby suffers unimaginable pain.

Meanwhile, Powell says a mother and her baby are not biologically one and the same thing.

"It doesn't matter whether you're religious or not," Powell insisted. "It doesn't matter whether you're a conservative or you're a progressive. I think there are just very good logical, biological reasons that are compelling arguments to say that we shouldn't abort unborn children."

The minister added that Australians are in danger of aborting themselves out of existence by taking more lives than they are adding to their population.

"I'll never forget seeing the movie, The Silent Scream, when I was at a university," Powell recalled. "I just can't sit through the entire screening without being overwhelmed with horror and sadness. The practice of abortion is a national shame."
