Rep. Tim Ryan (Ohio)An Ohio-based tea party activist says there's little chance of a Democrat winning the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Rob Portman.

Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) has announced he is running for the seat and currently appears to be consensus pick of the Democrats. But Ryan, who was actually a presidential candidate in 2019, is not well-known outside of his district, which is likely to vanish when congressional districts are redrawn for 2022.

"I don't think it's going to go very well for them," predicts Tom Zawistowski, president of the tea party-affiliated We the People Convention. "I think that Tim Ryan just is not very well known throughout Ohio, so that's why I think he ran for president in the Democratic primary, to try to get his name recognition up."

"But I think he's going to have a very tough time," Zawistowski continues. "There are many good candidates running for that Senate seat, and it's going to be a fight among the Republicans. But I think whichever Republican wins, they're going to hold that seat."

Zawistowski

Many political observers in The Buckeye State had believed that the Democrats would run Amy Acton, the former state health director who had a high TV profile during 2020.

"Her poll numbers were very high, so it's really telling to me that she's not the one they're backing," the conservative adds.

Zawistowski supposes, though, that it may have something to do with redistricting, as there seems to be a good chance that Ryan will lose his congressional seat.

"But quite frankly, I don't think the Democrats have anybody running for anything that has much of a chance of winning," he concludes.
