Gov. Gavin Newsom (2021 pic)The California secretary of state's office says there are enough verified signatures to trigger an election for the removal of Gavin Newsom (D) as governor, just the second such election in state history, and an assemblyman explains how the process will work.

Voters would face two questions: Should Newsom be recalled, and who should replace him?

"When we ultimately do go to vote, you're going to get a ballot that has two questions on it," says Assemblyman Kevin Kiley (R-6th District). "The first question is 'Do you want to remove Gavin Newsom as governor of California? Yes or no?'"

If more than 50% of voters choose yes, then Newsom's tenure as governor will be over. The votes on the second question will only be counted if more than half of the voters say yes to the first.

Kiley

"The second question on the ballot says, 'If Gavin Newsom is removed as governor, which of these candidates would you like to replace him?'" Kiley continues. "That'll probably be a very long list of candidates, because the last time we had a recall, there were 135 candidates."

If Newsom survives the recall, then he will be up for reelection in 2022.

As far as the timing, Kiley says California is "likely to have the actual election in early November."

Governor Newsom has called the effort a "Republican recall," while supporters of the governor have referred to it as a “coup." Kiley says they are concerned about the governor's future.
