Christopher Columbus statue (Ohio)Two prominent Republicans in Congress have pushed to drop Columbus Day as a federal holiday, suggesting the “cancel culture” has infected the GOP.

Sen. James Lankford and Sen. Ron Johnson filed an amendment last week to replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth, which is June 19 and commemorates the day in 1865 that black slaves in Texas finally learned they were freed more than two years earlier.

By the end of the week, on the eve of Independence Day, the amendment was pulled from a bill introduced by Sen. John Cornyn that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.

Sen. Johnson later explained the amendment was an attempt at fiscal responsibility: Swap one recognized federal holiday for another one instead of adding an eleventh day off to the calendar.

In recent weeks, statues of Christopher Columbus are being yanked to the ground, or painted with graffiti, more frequently than Confederate generals.

Responding to the senators’ amendments on his Fox News show, Tucker Carlson said America celebrates Columbus Day because it is a “celebration of the nation itself,” not just celebrating the Italian explorer who landed on the continent.

“Juneteenth commemorates the freeing of the American slaves. Emancipation is one of the great moments in America's history. It's why we consider Abraham Lincoln a hero,” Carlson told his audience. “But paradoxically, and this is odd, the people who are pushing Juneteenth on the country do not consider Abraham Lincoln a hero. They're pulling down the statues along with Columbus's.”

Lankford

Responding to the two senators and their proposal, pastor-apologist Alex McFarland says clueless Republicans are bringing a Bundt cake to a gun fight.

“The fight for the soul of the country is real,” he tells OneNewsNow, “and part of the battle has really been lost because of too much niceness on the part of Republicans.”

Rethinking Columbus (textbook cover)Carlson went on to speculate if the “cancel culture” will come after Independence Day, since the Left says America is racist, and Presidents’ Day, too.

“Officially, Presidents' Day is Washington's birthday,” Carlson continued. “And as you just heard, he is evil -- too evil to have a statue. So how can he have a holiday? It doesn't make sense.”

According to McFarland, the Left is attempting to turn America into a “socialist utopia” and it appears the “Republican hierarchy” doesn’t have “enough soul” to fight back.

“But we, the citizens, do,” McFarland adds.
