Have masks become a political weapon?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) recently issued an executive order authorizing business owners the right to deny entry to people not wearing masks or face coverings. The new edict comes as restrictions on shops are beginning to loosen around the state, though not yet in New York City.

Face coverings are already required in New York when people are out in public and near others, and other states and municipalities have also mandated masks, even though a number of studies question their effectiveness against COVID-19.

Gary Bauer of American Values says the left has used the mask as a political weapon.

"I think it's disgusting the way the media leaps to label anybody that chooses not to wear the mask as being somehow a know-nothing or stupid, when the experts themselves have had different advice about wearing a mask all through this ordeal," he observes.

And Bauer uses the incident invovling Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his wife wearing masks while attending a Memorial Day ceremony as another example.

Bauer, Gary (American Values)"Nobody at that area where he laid the memorial was going to get closer than ten feet to the vice president, but he and his wife thought that somehow this was showing their superiority or their seriousness by wearing a mask, when there was really no reason, logical or otherwise, for them to do so."

The World Health Organization recently declared that masks should only be worn by healthcare workers and those who are infected and said there is "no evidence" to show that "wearing a mask can protect healthy people from coronavirus." And Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, has called masks a "symbol" of good behavior.
