GOP and Dems duking it outA conservative activist says the results of a city council election in a small town in Virginia could be a sign that the Democrat-dominated state could be in play for Republicans in November.

The town of Staunton – population around 25,000 – is nestled in the Shenandoah Valley in northwestern Virginia. It is known for being the birthplace of Democratic President Woodrow Wilson. While 157 miles from the DC swamp, it still went for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 and for Hillary Clinton in 2016.

But in a recent city council election, three Democratic incumbents lost their seats to Republican challengers with a voter turnout that smashed previous election cycles. Those three joined a Republican incumbent, making it a four-seat GOP sweep. With Democratic Governor Ralph Northam imposing draconian coronavirus lockdown measures on the state's residents, these election results may point to a growing dissatisfaction with the Democratic control of the state.

Bauer, Gary (American Values)Gary Bauer of American Values, who resides in Virginia, sees a silver lining. "Certainly, the election results in this relatively small town in Virginia may present some early signals that there's a grassroots rebellion that's still building across Virginia as well as across the country," he tells OneNewsNow.

And Bauer notes that the turnout among pro-Trump/Pence Republican voters was significant.

"A good bit of Virginia is still rural," he notes. "And if that vote is still there, [if] it's not happy with the things that it's seen, [if] it's unhappy with the governor … it could put Virginia back in play this coming November, which would be a huge development."

According to the Daily Caller, the three Democrats all almost doubled their vote totals from four years ago, yet still lost. One local reporter described the results as "stunning almost beyond words."
