An immigration enforcement advocacy organization is concerned about the efforts of some politicians to provide coronavirus benefits to illegal immigrants.
Illegal aliens are costing California taxpayers more than $23 billion annually – the highest of any U.S. state. But recently California Governor Gavin Newsome (D) met with his state legislature to produce a coronavirus financial relief plan for illegal aliens. The plan aids those in that group who lost jobs as a result of the outbreak. And in Illinois, costs associated with illegal immigration costs taxpayers roughly $3.2 billion annually – yet Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) signed an executive order enabling illegal aliens to receive the city's coronavirus relief benefits.
Ira Mehlman is a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform. He points out that when Congress recently passed the $2.2 trillion stimulus package, it "explicitly excluded" illegal aliens from receiving benefits.
"[They did that] because they understood that we are in a time of crisis and we simply cannot offer benefits to people who have lost jobs that they had no legal right to hold in the first place," he tells OneNewsNow.
And as Mehlman notes, that didn't seem to matter to Governor Newsome.
"[In California] illegal aliens not only get the same benefits as everybody else, but generally get treated better than everybody else," says the FAIR spokesman. "Same thing in Chicago, [which] is a city that has all sorts of difficulties that they're dealing with – and the mayor has decided that she's going to try to get benefits for them as well."
Mehlman argues that it's clear to him that even during a pandemic, state- and local-level politicians who are pro-open borders put the interests of those who are in the country illegally over those of the actual American citizens who elected them.
