Are strict measures proportionate to the problem?

U.S. and Canada flagsA Canadian Christian educator and pro-family activist says Canada's low coronavirus numbers provide evidence that the stringent measures being imposed on much of the world are out of proportion to the actual impact of the disease.

As of Monday afternoon, Canada, with a population of 38 million, had over 15,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Nearly 3,000 of those have recovered, and 280 have died from the virus.

If Canada's population is roughly one-tenth of the United States, one would expect the death total to be almost 1,000. So why does Canada have such low numbers?

Dr. Charles McVety, president of Canada Christian College, says the numbers are actually comparable to most parts of the United States, "especially if you take away New York. Then the numbers would be relatively similar to Canada across the United States," he submits. "There are many states like Virginia and Florida where the numbers are relatively low."

To put this in perspective, Canada had over 8,500 deaths to the flu last year, but this year's 280 deaths to COVID-19 are considered more tragic than the 8,500.

"We're all locked in our houses and locked out of our jobs. The whole economy has ground to a halt. The churches are all closed. I know the death is tragic," McVety asserts, "but the numbers are so out of proportion that it's hard to wrap your mind around."

The Canada Christian College president is concerned that the people of western countries like Canada and the U.S. have ceded too much power to government.
