A former Justice Department attorney expects the out-of-control Democratic-led House will move forward with an attempt to impeach President Trump, but a leading evangelical voice doesn't think they'll get the results they're hoping for.
The White House has released the official transcript of the private telephone conversation between President Trump and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy – the conversation on which the Democrats are now basing their call to impeach President Trump. But according to the document, while the president did ask his Ukrainian counterpart to look into Joe Biden's alleged involvement in the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating Biden's son, Trump did not mention any aspect of withholding aid from that country if the act was not done.
"The Ukrainian transcript doesn't show anything unusual or wrong," asserts J. Christian Adams, a former Justice Department attorney who is now general counsel of the Public Interest Legal Foundation. "It's really strange that they were triggered by it. I think that anything Trump does triggers them. The fact that he was talking about potential criminal behavior by Joe Biden's son probably triggered them doubly bad. They don't want anybody talking about that, so that, of course, becomes an impeachable offense."
In other words, he says the Democratic base is salivating.
"They have been bitten by a rabid animal. They are out of control. They don't care that the president has a 51 percent approval rating," Adams continues. "This is a theology to them. This is their religion. It doesn't matter that they run the risk of motivating Trump's base. They don't see it that way. So I think there is a good chance that it will move."
He adds that the Democrats cannot help themselves, and Dr. Richard Land of Southern Evangelical Seminary says the party has been on this path for a while.
"The House leadership under the Democrats has been trying to undo the results of a legitimate election in 2016. They've never accepted the results," says Land.
Under pressure from her far left wing, Speaker Nancy Pelosi officially got the ball rolling on Tuesday.
"I'm announcing the House of Representatives moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry," she proclaimed. "I'm directing our six committees to proceed with their investigations under that umbrella."
"They tried collusion with the Russians, they tried obstruction of justice, they tried 'he's a racist,' they tried 'we're going to have a recession,' and now they're going after this absurd Ukrainian situation," Dr. Land summarizes.
But he recognizes that what they are actually trying to do is strike first.
"They're under the gun, because I'm telling you, indictments are coming from the Justice Department on the attempts to thwart the election, put their thumb on the scales by the FBI and the CIA before he was elected, and then to overturn the results of the election after he was elected," says Land.
So while the Justice Department inspector general report is imminent, if Congress starts investigating the Ukrainian situation, they are likely to find – in Land's words – "that Mr. Biden and Mr. Kerry's sons were corrupt up to their eyeballs in a very corrupt country."
