Texas flagThe newest U.S. Census data shows the Hispanic population exploding in Texas but a longtime Republican leader says many of them have warmed to the GOP message.

The census figures show Texas gained almost nine Hispanic residents for every additional white resident last year, and Hispanics are expected to become the largest population group in the Lone Star State as early as 2022.

Eyeing the state’s 38 electoral votes, Democrats have been working hard to turn the state “blue” and remove it from a future Republican president.

The Pew Research Center projects that the 2020 election will mark the first time that Hispanics will be the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the electorate, accounting for just over 13 percent of eligible voters. In raw numbers, a projected 32 million Hispanics will be eligible to vote in 2020, compared with 30 million blacks.

However, says Pew Research, recent presidential elections have shown that blacks are substantially more likely than Hispanics to vote – so voter turnout will play an important role in determining how much influence the Hispanic vote will have.

Cathie Adams, a former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas who is now 1st vice president of Eagle Forum, tells OneNewsNow that Hispanics are not a monolithic voting bloc for Democrats.

Adams

“The Hispanics who are here in Texas, who have enjoyed our economy, who have enjoyed our low jobless rates,” she says, “are people who are starting their own businesses.”

She says more than one-third of Hispanics vote Republican in Texas elections. There is, however, is a growing voting bloc in Texas that has her concerned.

“The Islamic community,” she says. “They say that they are pro-family that they are pro-life, but that is not the way that they are voting that I am seeing. They are Democrat through and through."

Hispanics are assimilating, she adds, but the Islamic community is not.
