cash 100-dollar billFederal lawmakers have pork-barrel fever and their only prescription is more earmarks. At least that is the analysis from an organization keeping tabs on government spending and waste.

"The 2019 Pig Book exposes 282 earmarks in fiscal year 2019, which is a 21 percent increase from FY 2018," says Curtis Kalin of Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), the organization behind the Pig Book.

CAGW reports that is actually the largest amount since 2010.

To make matters worse, the increase in pork-barrel spending occurs behind closed doors and remains hidden from taxpayers.

U.S. Capitol 3"There are no names of legislators attached to each earmark,” Kalin advises, “and limited information on where and how the money will be spent. "

Examples offered in the Pig Book include $9 million for a fruit fly quarantine program; $13.8 million for wild horse and burro management; $863,000 to eradicate the brown tree snake; and $65 million for the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund.

The Pentagon budget didn’t escape scrutiny either: CAGW points out $1.8 billion in earmarks for buying eight F-35 Joint Strike Fighters, continuing to add funds to a project that is years behind schedule and hundreds of millions of dollars over estimated budget.

"It's a distressing sign for taxpayers,” says Kalin, “that this problem does not seem to be getting any better."
