I am the pro-life generationMaine's pro-life movement suffered defeat at the hands of far-left legislators but the political fight has energized pro-lifers in the state.

The state legislature witnessed a shift to the left during the most recent election cycle, and Carroll Conley of Christian Civic League of Maine says the political shift helped pass a pro-abortion measure.

“We had a bill which, for the first time in our state's history, would not recognize the posture of our state to fall in line with the Hyde Amendment,” Conley tells OneNewsNow. “And so now Maine citizens are going to be forced to pay for elective abortions.”

The measure narrowly passed in the Senate 19-16.

The Hyde Amendment is a federal law that prohibits use of tax dollars for abortions, so now Maine's Medicaid funds will be used to abort babies.

Passage has been disheartening but Conley says there was something positive: it angered and energized citizens to organize and fight back.

“Every public hearing, every work session, every time we put out the call for people to show up for life in our halls,” she says, “it was a tremendous representation by pro-life Maine to respectively and effectively advocate.”

The turnout, in fact, set a record so Conley and Christian Civic League hope the effort and enthusiasm will carry forward to the next election.
