MedicaidA new survey reveals that most Americans favor work requirements for Medicaid recipients.

The Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey divulged that 64 percent of American adults believe that childless, able-bodied adults in their home state should be required to work as a condition for receiving Medicaid.

Economist Jonathan Williams of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) maintains that this mindset held by most Americans on the Medicaid issue is just common sense.

"It's just people out there working hard – trying to make a buck, trying to balance their own budgets for their family, make their lives better off, provide for their kids – and when they see able-bodied adults not having a work requirement to get government support, that's kind of a problem."

Democrats are opposed to the changes, warning that some people will lose coverage if they cannot meet the requirements, while others may be discouraged from applying.

Williams contends that this argument from the left is misplaced.

"Those that are truly needed – those who are in need of help, government assistance – are going to be completely fine on this,” the economics expert assured. “There's not going to be a work requirement applied even to some of those situations – those that are truly needed.”

On the other hand, he said those who should be concerned are adults who are unwilling – not unable – to work.

“The only people who need to be worried, perhaps – that they would lose some Medicaid dollars – are those who are sitting at home and able-bodied that should be out in the workforce,” Williams insisted. “And thanks to this economic turnaround that we've seen just in the first year of this administration – and the tax cuts – there are more of those job opportunities for folks out there to see."

So far, at least one state – Kentucky – has announced plans to impose a work requirement for Medicaid.
