Hillary Clinton was describing conservative Christians when she recently called Donald Trump supporters "deplorable," says a Christian apologist.
"You could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables," Clinton said at a September 9 fundraiser. "The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, islamophobic – you name it."
Almost immediately conservatives started to wear the accusation as a badge of honor, snapping up t-shirts and mugs printed with "I'm a Deplorable."
Christian apologist Alex McFarland says Clinton was singling out Christians for particular scorn.
"The word 'homophobic,' for the Left, has become a code word for their attack on Christians," he says, citing just one word over several that Clinton rattled off.
The name-calling is a bit silly, he says, and shows a lack of cleverness. But it can be a dangerous, too.
"The suffix 'phobic' is added on any time they disagree with you," says McFarland, "but really don't have the intellectual ability to intelligently argue their point."
When the Democratic presidential candidate cries "homophobia" and argues in favor of homosexuality, says McFarland, her problem is with God, since there are obvious moral rights and wrongs.
"The one that the Left - and I suspect Hillary - really find deplorable in their heart of hearts, really, is God," says McFarland.
