An immigration enforcement advocacy organization says it is outrageous that the federal government wants to force states and local school districts to foot the bill for English proficiency instruction to illegal aliens.

The Washington Post recently reported that the departments of Justice and Education sent a joint letter to school administrators instructing them that under federal law, students learning English as a second language are guaranteed targeted help and a high-quality public education.

Mehlman, Ira (Federation for American Immigration Reform)Critics say inclusion of the Justice Department is a veiled threat that non-compliance is likely to bring legal action against the local officials.

Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, or FAIR, says the federal government only covers a small fraction of education costs, so this is clearly an unfunded mandate on states and local school districts to provide illegal aliens English classes.

illegal immigrationHe tells OneNewsNow: "And quite frankly most states and local governments can't afford the additional burdens, not to mention dealing with a large number of kids who don't speak English who need special education just to teach them the basics."

The story in The Washington Post reported that federal officials signed the letter, intended for public schools across the country, that stated it's "crucial to the future of our nation that these students, and all students, have equal access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential."

The story described illegal alien children as "undocumented minors," who account for approximately nine percent of students in public schools.

While the federal government is demanding help for illegal aliens, Mehlman points out at that roughly half the states are suing the president over his plan to grant amnesty.

"And this is certainly evidence of the fact that they are harmed by the president's actions," Mehlman argues. "They are bearing directly substantial costs as a result of this administration's policy of not enforcing our immigration laws."
