Church leaders should wisely stand on the Word

Cowardly leadership often isn't leadership at all. Often it is simply saving face – and accomplishing nothing.

A letter signed by more than two dozen black pastors is requesting a post-election meeting with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. They say they want to discuss with her what they describe as "the critical issues" in the black community: education and employment, religious freedom, violence, and justice for the unborn. (See related story)

However, the actions behind the letter from these black church leaders seem to almost be saying:

"We are the leaders, so we have to find out which way our people are going so we can get in front of them. We are not trying, like Elijah, to boldly confront wicked leadership and speak prophetically 'Thus saith the Lord ...' – we are simply going to support 'our' candidate, help him or her get into office, and hope that he or she will throw us a bone or two if they are in a good mood."

If those who support this letter were serious about wanting to accomplish its stated goals, I believe a number of things would have been done very, very differently:

  • This kind of letter would not have been presented eight days before an election.
  • The candidate(s) being approached would know without question that if they do not consider these biblically based concerns, he or she WILL NOT get these leaders' support.
  • Those presenting the letter would seriously assess which candidate is closer in his or her biblically based beliefs based on the Word of God – and they would do this by looking at both the candidate's past actions and what he or she says they intend to do in the future.

To these pastors, I say this: As it stands, you are approaching a candidate who not only knows she has your support, but she knows that she CLEARLY OPPOSES most of the things you are supporting in this letter. And based on what she has said and done in the past, she has NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER of changing her opinion on these matters. In fact, she has indicated that she wants to change some of YOUR deeply rooted religious beliefs.

In others words, she wants you to be prepared to abandon the Bible, the Word of God, as your foundation of truth.

Sometimes so-called leadership can do more damage than good if it is cowardly in nature. Real leadership in the Kingdom of God courageously states what the Word of God says, stands on the Word of God, and does not support wicked leadership that clearly opposes the Word of God. To elect Jezebel and then to timidly ask her to consider your concerns is a feeble effort in futility! Do we believe in God and in the Word of God, or not?

God does not change. God does not take sides. He takes over! And wise people will get on God's side, stay there, and stand on the Word of God.
