A Christian human rights organization committed to promoting religious freedom and rule of law in China says there's a simply reason why the winner of a distinguished award has not received his prize.
Brynne Lawrence of China Aid tells OneNewsNow the honoree is Gao Zhisheng, who has been persecuted by China's Communist Party for decades.
"Throughout his decades-long career, he has stood up for people targeted by the Chinese Communist Party, and he has been imprisoned repeatedly for that, often even kidnapped," Lawrence details. "Sometimes he'll just disappear into custody with no warning."
In 2017, two of his supporters were able to sneak him out of house arrest, but they were soon caught in a neighboring province. He has also been tortured at least three times.
Recently, because of his persistence for justice, a panel of judges granted Gao Zhisheng the annual Lin Zhao Freedom Award.
"This award is in commemoration of a woman named Lin Zhao. She was a Christian and a dissident during the time of Mao," Lawrence says. "She was actually executed for her dissent, among the charges of which were slandering the Communist Party."
The award goes to someone who stands up for his or her beliefs and consistently maintains a non-violent posture in the face of persecution.
Not only has Gao not received the award, but no one knows whether he is alive or dead since he was imprisoned in 2017.
