hands on prison barsA court appeal date has arrived in Pakistan for a Christian couple sentenced to die for blasphemy.

Shagufta Kausar and her husband Shafqat Masih were given the death penalty in 2014 after they were found guilty of sending text messages to a mosque cleric that insulted Mohammed.

They have denied doing so and claim the accusation is false.

Mia Sparr of International Christian Concern tells OneNewsNow the country’s Lahore High Court is set to hear their appeal today, June 25, after five years of imprisonment.

According to an attorney representing the couple, the husband and wife deny they sent the text and suspect an elaborate plan by the cleric to frame them after a dispute arose between their children and the cleric’s children.

“The couple has said that they know the cost of committing blasphemy,” says Sparr, “and that they would never do something like this.”

The couple’s attorney, Nadeem Hassan, has told ICC the evidence against the couple is weak after police failed to present the SIM card for the phone.

The couple's plight is reminiscent of Asia Bibi, who sat on death row for the better part of nine years before a Pakistani court overturned her conviction and death penalty. She is now living with two of her daughters in Canada.
