Hundreds of thousands of refugees who fled to northern Iraq and Syria last year in the face of persecution by the Islamic State are now experiencing a second obstacle to survival.

According to Open Doors USA, about 300,000 Christians are facing food shortages. It has been a year since the Islamic State took over Mosul in Iraq. After fleeing the embattled city, many Christians headed north to Kurdistan.

Now, says Open Door's Emily Fuentes, these refugees are having difficulty accessing food and other necessities such as water and shelter.

"Initially there were several organizations that were sticking around to help and provide food and aid for these believers who'd been forced to flee their homes,” she tells OneNewsNow. “Unfortunately, we're seeing more and more organizations leave and more refugees come in."

Fuentes says the people have no way to pay for provisions.

"These Christians fled without anything except for the clothes on their backs, so they don't have any savings,” she says. “They can't afford to feed their families, and many of them are not able to access visas to work. Also, in Kurdistan, many of them don't even know the local language, so it would be very difficult to work."

Open Doors is launching a campaign to raise the estimated $20 million needed to provide food for refugees for the next 18 months.
