A spokesperson for a group of Christian organizations in the Middle East says France appears to have taken the lead in trying to find a resolution to protect Christians in Iraq and Syria.
The Middle East Christians Committee recently presented the United Nation's Security Council with concerns regarding religious minorities in Syria and Iraq, as well as Egyptian Copts threatened by ISIS. Tom Harb, general secretary for the Committee, says France stepped up while the U.S. did not.
"The French were very helpful in promoting the cause and finding a solution,” he says. “The Americans have kind of taken a step back. We feel like our government - the United States government, the Obama administration - has taken a step back. They are not really up front now. It seems like the French have gone up front to solve the issue of the Christians of the Middle East."
The group spokesman suggests a reason why that is the case with the Obama White House. "It seems that the administration does not want to jump into the fire and they don't want to have more issues with the Russians,” he tells OneNewsNow.
Harb says the Russians consider Syria as a sovereign country, while the U.S. and European countries do not because of the crimes against humanity committed by President Bashar al-Assad. He further explains that the French are taking the lead because they think there is a political vacuum without Western nations involved in the Middle East and they want to step in to fill that vacuum.
