U.S. Navy Hornets on carrierA former naval commander is concerned that Communist China is building an aircraft carrier that is in the same league as America's top carriers.

Satellite images of a building facility in Shanghai reveal the hull of a new Type-003 aircraft carrier under construction. It is significantly larger than the two current carriers serving in the Chinese Navy and should be able to carry heavier planes.

Retired Navy Commander Kirk Lippold, the former commander of the USS Cole who now serves as an adjunct professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, says the new carrier is said to be comparable to the U.S. Navy's Gerald R. Ford class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers currently being constructed for the United States Navy.

"The Gerald Ford class aircraft carrier is the cutting edge of our technology that we're building," says Lippold. "What you are seeing in China, building an equivalent sized aircraft carrier, is … part of a growing body of evidence that China is investing and building a military to challenge the U.S. in armed conflict. Their warfare doctrine and public statements have indicated that for years, and now it's coming to fruition."

The retired commander says China needs to be considered a national security threat.

"At this point they have passed the point of being a benign competitor, and they are now that threat," he submits. "With every bit of stolen intellectual property, China is continuing to turn that knowledge and experience into combat capability that they project power into the South China Sea with an aim to become a global military power. And you have to remember, China is not a democracy; they are a communist dictatorship."

Lippold insists it is time to get serious about confronting this threat.
