Chinese soldiers marchingA new border fight between China and India has cost lives and enflamed both countries, but a national security expert predicts the lethal stand-off will not escalate because neither country wants war.

The dispute over the Himalayan border goes back decades, with the last fatal clash in 1975, but 20 Indian troops were killed June 15 when a patrol stumbled across Chinese troops. That firefight happened after China sent thousands of troops into the disputed territory in late April, The Guardian newspaper reported.

It appears China is testing longtime rival India and evaluating the pushback, says Kirk Lippold, a retired navy commander who commanded the USS Cole.

“I think India is learning a very expensive lesson,” he observes, “that for years they have not invested in the kind of military that they've needed, and quite frankly they're getting their butt kicked.”

According to the Guardian article, both countries have built up a military presence in the disputed mountainous territory with new roads, air strips, and military outposts, but China has been more aggressive in the area.

Lippold tells OneNewsNow it is concerning how the longtime conflict could escalate and get “much bigger,” but right now both countries seem unwilling to commit to a bigger, bloodier military fight, he adds.
