border wall (illustration)The head of an immigration enforcement think tank says Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' immigration reform plan is a "recipe for disaster."

Sanders' plan, "A Welcoming and Safe America for All," would place a moratorium on deportations, end Immigrations and Customs Enforcement raids, stop construction of the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, end family separations, and support giving legal status to 1.8 million young illegal aliens currently eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), says the plan would also liberalize the asylum policy and basically open the floodgates to various individuals seeking to enter the country.

"It's a recipe for disaster," Krikorian asserts. "The only thing I can say is that if he got into power and did this, at least when the next midterm elections came two years later Democrats would be wiped out in both houses of Congress. So there is that. But the question is do you want to take the risk, and I would rather not. This is a ludicrously unrealistic immigration plan."

But he says this sort of thing has become the standard for mainstream Democrats.

"There's no reason this couldn't be Elizabeth Warren or frankly Joe Biden's immigration plan," the CIS executive submits. "Joe Biden says … we can't have open borders … to sound reasonable to voters in Pennsylvania, but the people he would appoint would all do exactly the same things as the ones Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren would appoint."
