Maduro and CabelloA national defense analyst says he is not surprised at claims the United States is communicating with an unsavory character in a backroom deal to remove Venezuela’s dictator, Nicholas Maduro.

A senior Trump administration official told The Associated Press that the U.S. has opened up secret communications with Venezuela's socialist party boss, Diosdado Cabello (pictured at left), who is considered the most-powerful man in Venezuela after Maduro (pictured at right).

Bob Maginnis, national security analyst at the Family Research Council, says the U.S. is meeting with the equivalent of a “Mafia warlord” but it’s really not a surprise to learn that.

“In that sort of environment, thugs tend to rule because they have a lot of money,” he says, “and they have the personnel to enforce their expectations."

According to the AP story, Cabello is viewed as a rival to Maduro and has more “pragmatic views” than Maduro, whose beliefs align closely with communist Cuba.

Maginnis says there is something else very disturbing about Cabello: he publicly threatened to kill U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio after the senator described him as Venezuela’s version of Pablo Escobar, the now-imprisoned Mexican drug lord.
