Kim Jong Un and soldiersA national defense analyst believes President Trump has gone out of his way to complement one of the world's worst human rights violators.

Last week President Trump shared about the "beautiful letter" he recieved from Kim Jong Un and said, "North Korea has tremendous potential under Kim's leadership."

An administration official described the letter as a "birthday greeting."

2020 Democrat hopeful Pete Buttigieg has slammed the president for "exchanging love letters with a brutal dictator," and the president has been criticized for perhaps being a bit too chummy with Kim in the past.

"Kim Jong Un is on the sanctions list for U.S. human rights violations," notes Bruce Klingner, senior research fellow for Northeast Asia at The Heritage Foundation. "The U.N. Commission of Inquiry concluded that North Korea, including under Kim Jong Un, is committing crimes against humanity, and yet the president has described Kim as 'honorable' and 'courageous' … that he didn't think that Kim was knowledgeable of the brutal treatment which led to the death of American citizen Otto Warmbier."

Klingner says the president's attitude about Kim clearly changed after he met the North Korean dictator.

"Since he met Kim, the president has not only refrained from any criticism but has seemingly gone out of the way to excuse North Korean behavior and compliment someone who is one of the world's worst human rights violators," the research fellow laments.

North Korea has remained at the top of the Open Doors World Watch List as the worst persecutor of Christians for 18 years in a row.
