Oval Office fightAn immigration enforcement advocacy organization contends that President Donald Trump must "put his money where his mouth is" and find a way to get his border wall funded.

Following a heated argument with Democratic leaders at the White House on Tuesday, it has become abundantly clear that Trump faces a tough fight over the next two years on border enforcement. The president has threatened repeatedly to "shut down" the government if Congress doesn't provide the money he says is needed to build a wall at the Mexican border – and he's said that Senator Chuck Schumer and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi don't want border security for "strictly political reasons."

Trump is "certainly in a tough situation," says Dave Ray, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

"Nancy Pelosi has called the wall 'immoral, ineffective, and expensive' – and Chuck Schumer has come out strongly against virtually any aspect of immigration enforcement," says the FAIR spokesman. "But [during his campaign] the president touted himself as the world's best deal-maker, and this is going to be his opportunity to put his money where his mouth is."

The president is asking Congress to approve $5 billion to add more wall along the border; Democrats have offered $1.6 billion for "border security" that doesn't include a wall.

Trump has a lot on the line as he prepares for his reelection run, says Ray.

"What he has yet to prove is his ability to get through [Congress] the centerpiece of his illegal immigration strategy, which is this border wall," he describes. "And the effectiveness of the border wall is proving itself right now in how it stopped the caravan in Tijuana."

Ray says it's clear that if more border wall were in place right now, the high illegal immigration numbers currently being seen would not be occurring.
