Whose idea was it to turn Gitmo over to Cubans?

A retired Navy officer and military analyst wouldn't be surprised if President Obama actually encouraged Cuba's communist leader to push for the return of the Guantanamo Bay military detention center to Cuban control.

In mid-December, President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced they would move toward renewing full diplomatic relations by reopening embassies in each other's countries. But during a recent summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, Castro demanded that before normal relations are re-established, the U.S. must return the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, lift the half-century trade embargo on Cuba, and compensate his country for damages.

Lippold

Commander Kirk Lippold (USN-Ret.), who commanded the USS Cole when it was attacked by terrorists in 2000, offers his candid response.

"I'm going to be very blunt on this one," he tells OneNewsNow. "It would not surprise me in the least if the president or his administration proposed to the Cubans to make this demand so that he would have a face-saving avenue to be able to try and close Guantanamo Bay."

The retired Navy commander argues that the base needs to remain open as an intelligence facility.

"... [Gitmo] should be used what it was originally designed for," he states, "which was to protect freedom and protect this nation by bringing terrorists to that facility and figuring out how they recruit, equip, train, finance and conduct those operations."

But Lippold says Obama wants to close down Gitmo because he would much rather fulfill a political promise than actually use the facility to defend the nation.
