As the number of people killed in Saturday's massive earthquake in Nepal has risen to more than 4,000, Christian humanitarian organizations are working to aid survivors.

The 7.8 magnitude quake injured more than 7,000 and left tens of thousands homeless.

"There's just utter devastation," reports Chris Toews of Samaritan's Purse.

A disaster response team from Samaritan's Purse has been deployed, responding first to "crush injuries" and similar medical emergencies.

"We have a six-person medical team composed of surgeons and the like," says Toews, "and then we will be focusing on initially getting shelter, housing items such as kitchen kits and blankets, to roughly 15,000 people initially. But that number is expected to grow as our assessments on the ground come back."

Samaritan's Purse is accepting donations as Toews anticipates they will be in Nepal for a long time helping to rebuild.

The earthquake was the worst to hit the poor South Asian nation in more than 80 years.

"We're so thankful that we have the opportunity to take our skill sets into that area," says the Samaritan's Purse spokesman. "And we are praying for God's blessing as we continue to do what we can to provide relief for the people of Nepal."
