John Oliver being a punk-jerk-idiotA late-night legend is lamenting the current crop of comedians.

Former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno visited the “Today Show” this week and was asked if it's easier or harder to do a monologue in the age of Trump.

His answer was not what the Trump-hating crew seem to be expecting: there needs to be more civility.

“People say it must be easy to do jokes with Trump,” he continued. “No, It's actually harder.”

The 22-year veteran of late-night comedy went on to complain the punchline of every joke is seemingly the same, and although he admires the current crop of Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and the rest, they might want to choose a different topic every once in a while.

Curtis Houck of Media Research Center calls Leno the “perfect messenger” for that criticism.

“Because even during the Obama years, when the late-night comics really wouldn't do anything to make fun of him,” Houck recalls, “he would make periodic jokes about Obama and the Republicans.”

Leno told this Halloween-themed joke just weeks before Election Day in 2016:

Hillary Clinton got quite a scare tonight. I guess a trick-or-treater came to the door dressed as a lie detector. And I tell you, that Donald Trump, he is a smart businessman. When kids rang his bell and yelled ‘trick or treat,’ Trump yelled 'trick' and before the kids could grab any candy, declared bankruptcy.

Houck says this generation of hosts seems to have forgotten why they're on TV.

“There's really no daylight now,” he says, “between Chris Cuomo, Rachel Maddow and the late-night comics.”
