CNBC 'Great Depression' headlineA third of Americans predict the economy will get worse in 2019 according to a new poll, and a media watchdog says the media is to blame for such dire numbers.

According to the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Americans said the improving economy was the most important issue to them in 2018, though those same people described a gloomy opinion for the coming year.

The booming economy of 2018, which boasted historic employment numbers and a galloping stock market, has been a highlight of the Trump presidency so far. But recent headlines are painting a dire picture, predicting everything from a slowing economy to doom-and-gloom scenarios.

"Stock market on pace for worst December since Great Depression," reads the headline of a CNBC story linked on the popular Drudge Report website.

"Alan Greenspan to investors: 'Run for cover'" reads a CNN Business headline, also linked at Drudge.

Get the picture? People who think a recession is coming are less likely to spend money or generally participate in the economy, which could actually cause a recession.

Dan Gainor of the Media Research Center says a dishonest and complicit media could make that self-fulfilling prophecy come true.

"Of course they're influencing our opinions and they're influencing them in the negative when it comes to the economy," he complains. "They downplay good economic news and then play up hype."

According to the same NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, almost half of Americans says President Trump is guilty in the Mueller probe even though his defenders say nothing is actually pointing that way.

Gainor

Gainor says suspicions about Trump's political future are behind the stock market volatility of late.

"The market reacts to uncertainty," he says. "The market doesn't want an impeachment. The media do, so the media bombard us with impeachment news and the market doesn't like that."

Trump, meanwhile, is blaming the Federal Reserve for putting the brakes on the economy in recent months, complaining in a Monday tweet that the Fed is considering "yet another interest rate hike" despite a "very strong dollar and virtually no inflation."

No matter what happens to the economy, Gainor adds, the media has taken a whatever-it-takes attitude toward bringing down Trump.
