Weekly Standard coverThe Weekly Standard is closing up shop after 23 years of mainline conservative news and opinion, and now opinions are flying over what did it in.

You would think that a conservative magazine would flourish with Republicans in control of the White House, both chambers of Congress, and a Supreme Court that's shifting to the right.

But whether because it's a tough time for all print media, or that it never took a shine to President Trump, or it was "murdered" --- as The New York Times opines ---the last issue will publish today.

Political analyst Jeff Crank says it was a combination of things that sent the Standard to its doom.

"Print media is just tougher," he observes. "It's tougher for newspapers, it's tougher for everybody, and I think they probably didn't move toward the online applications quite as quickly as others have."

Crank

Yet another reason for the demise, he adds, is when a conservative outlet goes after the president of the United States, when he is supported by most Republicans, then your niche market dries up.

As for the Times "murder" theory, it says the publisher prevented it from being sold out of spite and wanted to keep the subscription list for profit.

Whatever the reason, Crank says editor-at-large Bill Kristol seemed to hold the anti-Trump line to the bitter end.

"Bill Kristol, from the very beginning, that's just the position he took and he wasn't going to change from it," Crank says. "Through two Supreme Court justices that were solid conservatives, he's still anti-Trump."

Crank describes himself as a converted fan of President Trump and tells OneNewsNow he's sorry to see the Standard go.

"I'm always sad anytime we see a conservative outlet go away, or any particular voice be silenced," he says, "because I think it strengthens us as a party when we have different voices. and I think they'll be missed."
