'3 Generations' movie stillThe head of a media watchdog group says the trustworthiness of the Motion Picture Association of America’s ratings system is in question after it reduced the rating of a controversial movie.

Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein complained to the MPAA about the initial rating given to his film “3 Generations” about a teenage girl attempting to transition to a boy.

Weinstein argued that the social message is the film merited the PG-13 rating, which generally would mean a larger audience in the theatre seats.

Although originally rated “R” for language, the MPAA complied with Weinstein’s wish and changed it to “PG-13.”

“What we have here,” says Tim Winter president of the Parents Television Council, “is Harvey Weinstein saying his films are too important to be held to the same standard as any other film."

Weinstein's company paid $6 million to distribute the film two years ago.

Winter tells OneNewsNow that the decision was ultimately based on an attempt to sell more tickets to Weinstein's film.

“Harvey Weinsten says his movie is too important not to be able to have children see it,” Winter explains, “and yet he's happy to charge those same children to go in and watch the movie."

If it's such an important film, Winter asks, why not let them see if for free?
