A media watchdog finds it ironic that public outcry has compelled the Super Bowl to pull a "harmful" ad about a puppy from this year's lineup, while racy and provocative ads are deemed okay.

Henson, Melissa (PTC)The web hosting company Go Daddy has pulled its ad featuring a puppy being sold online, as many believed it promoted puppy mills. But Melissa Henson with the Parents Television Council wonders where the uproar was about the controversial ads in the past featuring scantily-clad women.

"I don't remember them ever pulling their ads because they were too sexually suggestive or too racy for the Super Bowl," she recalls, "so it's kind of curious to me anyhow that they consider one to be egregious and in bad taste and they don't consider the Go Daddy girls to be out of bounds or in bad taste."

Henson further finds it interesting that the puppy ad is more controversial in some people's minds than the Carl's Jr. commercial, "which shows a woman who we are supposed to infer -- and we learn at the end that she does have clothing on -- but for two-thirds of the commercial we're supposed to infer that she's walking around a farmer's market totally naked."

"So that apparently is perfectly fine for the Super Bowl, but the Go Daddy puppy ad is not suitable for the Super Bowl," she concludes.
