Texas already has some of the most conservative gun laws in the country and more than 1.6 million handgun license holders. But now, with Governor Greg Abbott (R) having pledged to sign the bill into law once the differences between the Senate and House versions are worked out, The Lone Star State will join some 20 other states in eliminating the need to have a gun license at all.

Supporters of the legislation say it will allow Texans to better defend themselves in public while abolishing unnecessary hurdles to their constitutional right to carry a gun.

"A citizen doesn't have to get the government's permission to carry a firearm outside of their home for the protection of themselves and their families," points out Mike Hammond, legislative council to Gun Owners of America (GOA). "I think Texas is showing that it is the red state that we all assumed it would be."

Hammond says it took Texas longer to eliminate the license requirement because of one legislator.

"In the past years, things like permitless carry have had problems because there's been sort of a squishy speaker of the House in Texas. Now he's gone, and Texas I think is prepared to go forward into the 21st century in support of the Second Amendment," the GOA spokesman tells One News Now.
