First Amendment attackA Christian law firm is defending a town whose veterans' memorial has become a sore spot for a notorious anti-Christian activist.

Monument, Colorado, is proud of its 16-year-old resident Michael Carlson, an Eagle Scout who spent two years raising money to erect a monument in honor of military veterans like his father. The memorial he created is privately designed, privately maintained, and located on private burial plots in the Monument Cemetery.

But Mikey Weinstein, the longtime anti-Christian activist who runs the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, is demanding that the monument be removed because it includes Christian sentiments. He describes the memorial as a "wretched, unconstitutional dumpster fire" and an "unconstitutional gambit/scheme to get the American military to endorse and validate the fundamentalist Christian nationalist message of supremacy, dominance, exclusivity and exceptionalism."

Mike Berry of First Liberty Institute, the firm representing the town of Monument, says Weinstein is trying to bully his client.

Berry

"The old saying that no good deed goes unpunished -- look no further than Mikey Weinstein, who is, of course, someone who is perpetually offended by anything that is good and wholesome, especially if it involves religious freedom in our military," Berry relays.

But in this case, the town has no intent of acceding to Weinstein's demands.

"It's a private monument, it's private speech, and it's on private property," Berry explains. "The government has no business trying to tell a private citizen who puts up a memorial on private property what they can and cannot say."

So if Weinstein actually decides to file a suit, Berry is confident that Monument will win in court.
