Barr: Answers 'inadequate' so far over origins of Trump spying

Dept. of Justice 1The nation’s top law enforcement officer has dropped a clue that authorities associated with the Russia probe have more questions to answer about their surveillance of the Trump campaign and the controversial evidence that triggered a FISA warrant.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Attorney General Bill Barr defended the current investigation of the Obama administration by stressing that if Americans deserved to know if a foreign country attempted to influence the 2016 election, they should also be concerned if U.S. officials “abused their power” during the same election.

Barr pointed out that Special Counsel Bob Mueller did not investigate the evidence that kicked off the Obama-era spy campaign against then-candidate Donald Trump and his associates. That was not part of the investigation, Barr said.

“[Mueller] was looking at whether or not the Trump campaign had conspired with the Russians,” Barr said of the special prosecutor’s investigation that spanned almost two years. “But he was not going back and looking at the counterintelligence program.”

Now that Mueller’s probe is completed, scrutiny of the so-called Steele dossier, a Democrat-funded research document that triggered the FISA warrant, is now underway. Barr has appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham to oversee an inquiry, and an investigation of misconduct at the Dept. of Justice is pending from the Justice Dept. inspector general, Michael Horowitz.

The controversial “Deep State” operation against Trump is already known to Republican lawmakers, who have witnessed a slow drip of names and questionable actions within the Obama administration.

FBI director Comey testifying 2The Obama administration used the “crushing power of the state to take an opposition research document, the dossier, dress it all up, take it to secret court, and get a warrant to spy on fellow American citizens so they can in essence spy on the Trump campaign,” Rep. Jim Jordan alleged last fall.

Trump, meanwhile, was mercilessly mocked by Democrats and liberal media for claiming he was the victim of a spy campaign. Now many of those same Democrats have gone from mocking him to a straight-faced assurance that the FBI was investigating the Russians, not Trump himself, even though Democrats and their media allies were predicting impeachment and prison time as they awaited Mueller's report.

Trump and Obama at WH post-electionWith the IG report pending and Durham’s investigation now under way, Barr told Fox News host Bill Hemmer that the purpose is to find out “what the government was doing” in the early stages of the anti-Trump investigation.

“I've been trying to get answers to questions and I found that a lot of the answers have been inadequate,” Barr disclosed. “And I’ve found that some of the explanations I’ve gotten don’t hang together.”

The first FISA warrant, which allowed surveillance of Carter Page, a Trump campaign advisor, was signed by James Comey, Rod Rosenstein, Andrew McCabe, and Sally Yates, The Daily Caller reported earlier this year, citing a House Intelligence Committee memo.

Barr also took at jab at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, responding to her claim that the attorney general “lied to Congress” at an April 9 hearing.

Barr called that a “laughable charge” and told Hemmer it’s an attempt to discredit him out of concern over the information that is coming.
