MedicaidA pro-family group in Iowa says other states ought to be paying attention to a recent court ruling there that allows Medicaid to cover sex-reassignment surgery.

"This particular case stems from something that happened back in 2007 in Iowa [when] we had some new language added to our civil rights code – and that's where people in other states really need to have their ears perked up," says Drew Zahn of The Family Leader. (See related story from The Associated Press)

"When you make sexual orientation and gender identity [SOGI] a protected class, what ends up happening is eventually … lawsuits come into place that say, Hey, you can't discriminate against me by not allowing me to use the bathroom of my choice or not allowing me to have this particular kind of surgery and so forth."

Some states have SOGI laws; many others do not (see map).

"That's what happened in Iowa … and here we are 12 years later and we discover that taxpayers are now funding for sex-change operations," Zahn continues. "That's how that all works, and it all goes back to what gets put into your civil rights code."

IowaZahn says as a Christian organization, The Family Leader believes God has designed human sexuality for our ultimate good – "and it's grievous to see the state enforce measures that encourage and now even compel taxpayers to fund other people seeking fulfillment outside of God's design," he shares.

That, says Zahn, is why Christians should be active and engaged in politics.

"Christians everywhere have a voice to our government and in how our government is led, even the biblical example of the prophet Nathan who spoke to David and called out David and was a moral compass to David," he explains.

Zahn argues that the Church, as a whole, still has that biblical role to speak to America's leaders and be that "moral compass" for the nation.
