An organization is commending the governor of Mississippi for his efforts to defend the law – and the backbone of American society.
Attorneys for Gov. Phil Bryant (R-Miss.) are defending pro-family legislation known as the "Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act."
Also known as HB 1523, the law protects three beliefs: marriage is only between a man and a woman, sex should only occur in such a marriage, and a person's gender is determined at birth – and cannot be altered.
Homosexual and straight residents of Mississippi have challenged the law, contending that it will license discrimination of the LGBT community. However, the law took effect in October and a challenge was quickly filed at the Supreme Court, where the governor's attorneys wrote this week that the law protects people from being penalized for refusing to participate in activities they consider as "immoral" – such as same-sex “marriage.”
Rob Chambers of AFA Action – the politically active arm of the American Family Association – has nothing but accolades for Bryant’s support of the law, which is geared to protect families.
"Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant is to be commended for protecting the freedom of religious expression for the citizens in his state," Chambers asserted. "After the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision to uphold the right to same-sex marriage, a conflict between religious liberty and that decision developed. Because of this conflict, the federal attorney arguing for same-sex marriage said, ‘different states could strike different balances,’ meaning that states could decide how to ensure religious liberty while guaranteeing the freedom of same-sex marriage.”
Stemming the ever-increasing tide of LGBT-friendly policies and laws, Chambers believes that Bryant followed the lead of the Supreme Court and struck that balance with HB 1523.
